History

The Wheatley Heights Sports Complex was developed as part of Bexar County’s 2008 Community Venues initiative, a public effort to expand recreational and cultural facilities across the region. The site itself carries deeper local significance, as it was built on City-owned land in the Wheatley Heights neighborhood that had been reclaimed following the devastating 1998 flood.

Funding for the project reflected a strong partnership between local government entities. Bexar County contributed $7.5 million through the visitor tax program, while the City of San Antonio invested an additional $2.5 million in infrastructure improvements. The complex officially opened in August 2012, creating a long-awaited space dedicated to athletics, events, and community engagement on the Eastside.

Since opening, the facility has continued to grow and evolve. In 2017, a City bond allocated $3 million to expand the complex with an event hall and fieldhouse, enhancing its ability to host programs and large gatherings. More recently, a 2022 City bond provided $1 million for facility rehabilitation, ensuring the complex remains safe, functional, and accessible for future generations.

Today, the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex stands as both a symbol of recovery and a cornerstone of community life on San Antonio’s Eastside, supporting youth development, athletics, and neighborhood pride.
